How to | Break Up With Your Old Accountant

Break up conversations. They are a tricky conversation to have, especially if you still like the person you’re speaking to. We’ve all been there. We know that sometimes a relationship just isn’t a good fit. Maybe you don’t hear from them enough, or you don’t have the same long-term vision. Whatever it is, you’ve decided that it’s time to move on.

This is why many clients decide to make the switch to working with us here at Walker Hill.

Telling someone that you don’t want to do business with them anymore is never a fun conversation to have. After all, no one wants to let another person down and why changing accountants can often feel a very similar to a relationship break up.

If you’re thinking about making the move to Walker Hill and aren’t sure how to have that conversation, we’ve created a simple guide below with what to do or how you can avoid this.

One thing we want to disclaim here is that we do recommend putting the breaks on this conversation if you still have work being completed by your old accountant or if you still have any outstanding bills. By waiting until work is completed and your account has been balanced ensures a seamless transition.

When it comes to a breakup conversation, there are two main ways to do this.

  1. You have a heart-to-heart; or
  2. You outsource it.

The Heart to Heart

If you’ve moving over from a long-standing relationship, you may want to have a conversation with your old accountant about why you’ve decided to move on. You may want to do this via email to avoid an awkward confrontation when providing your feedback. By keeping this conversation constructive, this feedback is often welcomed and will provide an opportunity for them to improve on the points that have made you move.

Talking to your old accountant will also prepare them for when we make contact about you moving over.

Outsourcing it to us

If you’re not interested in providing feedback, you may wish to avoid a conversation all together. This is where we come in to help you advise your old accountant of your move to us. No awkward conversation and no hassle. We remove the emotion and inform your old accountant and official government organisations of your move, organise hand over of your permanent documents, access to your accounting software and begin onboarding you into our Walker Hill Community.

If you’ve found yourself looking for a new accountant relationship, now could be the time to see if we’d be a good working fit for each other. With the stress of the breakup eased, contact us today to book in for a discovery session so we can find out more about you, your business and your future goals.
